چکیده

An overview of developments in materials theory is presented, with an emphasis on first-principles calculations. Examples are given from the fields of heterojunction interfaces and point defects in semiconductors. Predictive theories of materials are shown to be increasingly important for understanding but also designing materials and structures. © 2003 American Vacuum Society. @DOI: 10.1116/1.1599867#

Application of atomic scale STEM techniques to the study of interfaces and defects in materials.

Incoherent imaging and analysis techniques in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) provide the potential to map changes in structure, composition and bonding that occur at materials interfaces and defects on the fundamental atomic scale. Such comprehensive characterization capabilities permit a detailed analysis of the structure-property relationships of interfaces and defects t...

اثر ناخالصی اتمی بر خواص الکترونی ابرشبکه‌هایی از نانولوله کربنی

In this paper, electronic properties of single-wall armchair and zigzag carbon nanotubes (CNTs) superlattices, n(12,0)/m(6,6) and n(12,0)/m(11,0) are investigated. For this reason, the topological defects of pentagon–heptagon pairs at interfaces of carbon hexagonal network appear. These defects break the symmetry of the system, and then change the electrical properties. The calculations inclu...

The effect of electronic disequilibrium on the received dose by lung in small fields with photon beams: Measurements and Monte Carlo study

Background: Prediction of the absorbed dose in irradiated volume plays an important role in the outcome of radiotherapy. Application of small fields for radiotherapy of thorax makes the dose calculation process inaccurate due to the existence of electronic disequilibrium and intrinsic deficiencies in dose calculation algorithms. To study the lung absorbed dose in radiotherapy with smal...

A polarity-induced defect mechanism for conductivity and magnetism at polar-nonpolar oxide interfaces.

The discovery of conductivity and magnetism at the polar-nonpolar interfaces of insulating nonmagnetic oxides such as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 has raised prospects for attaining interfacial functionalities absent in the component materials. Yet, the microscopic origin of such emergent phenomena remains unclear, posing obstacles to design of improved functionalities. Here we present first principles ca...

Quantum Impurity Models as Reference Systems for Strongly Correlated Materials: The Road from the Kondo Impurity Model to First Principles Electronic Structure Calculations with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

Dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) relates extended systems (bulk solids, surfaces and interfaces) to quantum impurity models (QIM) satisfying a self-consistency condition. This mapping provides an economic description of correlated electron materials. It is currently used in practical computations of physical properties of real materials. It has also great conceptual value, providing a simple ...
